I know not many people post here, but a lot of people have told me that they read the stuff on this board. Lots of people told me they liked the old SFD pictures I put up, so I’ve decided to add some more old SFD stuff.
Lots of people have asked me about the locations of old firehouses. I’m not sure how many of these buildings are still standing (many of them are), but here’s a list (according to the 1913 SFD yearbook I have):
Engine 1: 2nd St between K and L Engine 2: 10th St between I and J Engine 3: 19th St. between L and M (now a restaurant, across from Chipotle) Engine 4: 26th St. between L and M Engine 5: 9th St. between T and U Truck 1: 6th St. between K and L Truck 2: 19th St. between L and M (same location as Engine3; back then the numbering system was different- two rigs in the same house could have different numbers) Chemical Co. #1: 5th St. between J and K Chemical Co. #2: 22nd St. between S and T Chemical Co. #3: 20th St. between D and E Oak Park Volunteer Fire Department: Cypress St. between 34th and 35th, in the quietly developing community of Oak Park.
OPFD was annexed into the city, I believe, in 1910.
Feel free to add to the list!

On November 2nd, 1852, a fire broke out in downtown Sacramento, right where the County Jail now sits. The blaze quickly grew, and burned for 2 nights. 1500 buildings were destroyed, 8000 people were homeless, and the fire burned all the way to the river. A large portion of the city was a complete loss. New fire codes were created, and the city was built up again. The Lady Adams building, at 119 K St. in Old Sac is said to be the only building to survive the Great Fire of 1852.
